Gong Bath

Gong Bath:
Meditation Using Sound Vibrations

A gong bath is a form of meditation using sound vibrations. Participants lie on a yoga mat or sit on a chair and the sound practitioner plays a variety of gongs and instruments. It is referred to as a bath as participants are immersed in the vibrations of the sounds.

What are the benefits?

The gong has been used throughout history as an instrument for ceremonial and healing purposes. The gong’s vibration creates an ocean of sound that is profoundly relaxing and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, creating a powerful method for reducing stress. Sources describe its use as far back as 16,000 B.C.

The gong induces a holistic resonance in the body and a spontaneous meditative state in the mind, resulting in a sense of expanded awareness and wholeness. Typically, the listener’s heart rate slows, blood pressure drops, and breath is restored to its natural rhythm.

What happens during the session?

We will set the intentions for the session during a 10-minute relaxation using singing bowls and a Koshi.

Then the gong is played, as well as various other sound instruments, for 40 minutes.

At the end, participants will be offered an herbal tea and they can choose to share their experiences with others.

What type of gongs are used?

Gongs are tuned with the natural harmonic series based on the orbital properties of the Earth, the Moon, the Sun, and the Planets according to the calculations of Hans Cousto. Thus they resonate in harmony with the cycles of the celestial bodies.

I use a 24″ Planetary Neptune Gong and an 18″ Chinese Chau Gong. The Neptune gong resonates at the approximate musical note of G#. Neptune represents oneness, unity, unlimited boundaries and water. The Chau Gone has the approximate musical note of C#.
